Momir Ilic resigns in Wetzlar

Momir Ilic resigned as head coach of Handball Bundesliga side HSG Wetzlar on Thursday morning. His assistant coach, Vladan Jordovic, has also stepped down to clear the way for a fresh start. The duo had taken charge of the central Hessian club in the summer. After a good start to the season with five points from the first six matches, the team went on to lose eleven competitive games in a row and slipped into the relegation zone.
“For us as a club, this step is a painful one. Momir and Vladan invested everything to manage a turnaround together with the team. The fact that it didn’t work out affects all of us. I have great respect for Momir and Vladan for their consistent and responsible decision. That is anything but a given. For us, it is now important to find a good solution for their successor,” said Jasmin Camdzic, HSG Wetzlar’s sporting director.
“In the past months, we have invested a lot and given our best. The recent results are just as sobering for us as they are for every fan, every sponsor and everyone who carries this club in their heart. The club and the people here in Wetzlar have grown dear to me in a very short time. That is why I deeply regret this development. At the same time, I am taking responsibility in this difficult situation. The team needs a new impulse,” said Momir Ilic.
“I would like to thank Momir Ilić and Vladan Jordović for their efforts and I respect their decision. However, they are not solely responsible for our current situation. Every player has to question themselves and their performances so far. We need more focus, a better mindset in dealing with this situation and an absolute willingness in every match to give everything – really everything – for the teammate next to you. I trust in the quality of our players, but they must show that quality on a regular basis,” said HSG Wetzlar managing director Björn Seipp, who informed the team about the coaches’ decision this morning and at the same time made it very clear how much responsibility rests on the players.
