Over 400 Danes are supporting Bjerringbro-Silkeborg in Kiel

A tough assignment is ahead of the Danish Champions of Bjerringbro-Silkeborg on Saturday, when they face THW Kiel in the VELUX EHF Champions League.

Bjerringbro-Silkeborg is on their way to one of the most attractive places in the world of handball. On Saturday, they are playing in city of Kiel, where the people are crazy about handball and they are facing the giants of THW Kiel.

– Kiel has been leaders of European handball during the last 20 years, said Bjerringbro-Silkeborg’s Allan Damgaard.

Next season, he changes to Göppingen and one of the reasons for that is the handball culture in Germany in the atmosphere in the arenas. The very best atmosphere is maybe found in Sparkassen Arena in Kiel, where Bjerringbro-Silkeborg plays on Saturday.

– It is a great home court. Veszprem and Kiel is probably the best places in the world to play handball. Kiel has a fantastic arena where the spectators are used to watch the top games and know when to cheer, told the back court player of Bjerringbro-Silkeborg who can look forward to support from 400 Danish spectators.

– It is amazing that so many people are going to Kiel to support us. It means a lot to us.

There is no doubt that Bjerringbro-Silkeborg needs support in Germany. THW Kiel is playing in the VELUX EHF Final4 almost every year and have star players on every position, including the two Danes Niklas Landin and René Toft Hansen.

– We play against a world class team. They have more than just one start player on every position and it is of cause one of the best teams in the world but they have some young players as well, especially on the left back position. We hope that we can challenge them with our offensive defense, told Allan Damgaard.

Deeply inside, do you believe that you can beat Kiel?

– As a handballer, you shall always believe in yourself and I do mean it when I say that I think that we can manage to win. It does sound a bit naïve because it is not often you can make an upset in Kiel but I had a good feeling after our home game against Kiel in October. We did great defensively in that game but had problems to score against Niklas Landin. So, if we can do well again defensively and do better offensively, I think that we can challenge them.

Before the game in Kiel, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg is seventh in Group A of the VELUX EHF Champions League. They are four point behind Wisla Plock who currently is advancing to the Last 16. In order to move past the Polish in the table, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg need to beat Kadetten Schaffhausen at home and create an upset either in Flensburg or in Kiel this Saturday. Throw off is at 17.30 and the game is live on DR3 Denmark and EHFTV.com.
