TOP 10 HANDBALL MOMENTS 2016: New rules, miracle in Cologne, Bad Boys, free-resin…

Year 2016 coming to the end! Handball-Planet.com wants to remind you on the biggest moments in the last 12 months with TOP 10 handball moments list.

  1. New rules – a lot of questions

Forced to change something, International Handball Federation announced certain changes in handball rules. The six of them were included in the game from July 1 and the first big event was Olympic tournament in Rio. There are a lot of “pro and contra” arguments, but the only thing which is clear – is that we must change handball in order to make it more global and better product.

  1. Bad BOYS conquere Europe

The most influental country in handball world – Germany, got a new gold medal, first since 2007. Dagur Sigurdsson made fantastic job with the generation called “Bad Boys” by winning gold medal at European Championship 2016 in Poland.

  1. Kielce’s miracle in Cologne – The final which will never be forgotten

The Year 2016 will be remembered also for the fantastic success of Vive Tauron Kielce – winning the EHF Champions League after historical final in which Veszprem had +9 15 minutes before the final whistle.

  1. The end of Claude Onesta ERA

One of the most successful coaches of all-time, Claude Onesta, left French bench after Olympic Games in Rio after unforgetable 15 years. He is replaced by his two ex-players, Dinart and Guille.

  1. Russian BEAR is back!

Russian girls won Olympic gold for the first time. Even he was almost dead as a coach after 2012, when he left Russian bench, Evgeny Trefilov had fantastic come-back to the TOP in the most desired moment in Rio.

  1. Danish dreams come true

Denmark won Men’s Olympic tournament for the first time in the history even it looked that some things aren’t good under Gudmundur Gudmundssson. However, Icelander didn’t let to be defeated in his second Olympic final.

The International Handball Federation raised awareness about intention to produce “resin-free ball” in 2017 in cooperation with Molten. There are still a lot of questions about it, but next year will give more answers on it.

The real earth-quake in handball world made decision of Dagur Sigurdsson to leave Germany and to accept Japanese offer until Tokyo 2020. It could be a great thing for handball globally, if Icelander make improvement in Asian team and help Japan to raise even after this Olympic cycle.

  1. Rhein Neckar Lowen first German title

Rhein Neckar Lowen won the first title in DKB Bundesliga history. Team of Nikolaj Jakobsen made last season great in the competition, which Germans respect more than EHF Champions League.

  1. CSM Bucharest surprise in Budapest

Romanian CSM Bucharest won the first major title – Women’s EHF Champions League trophy at Final4 in Budapest in May. Kim Rasmussen was a leader of the team who wasn’t among TOP favorites to make a winners’ party in season 2015/2016. Great result for Romanian handball, which investments were finally payed off.
